{Earth}5 facts about Australia's fires: what caused them? What can we do?

1. What caused the bushfires in Australia?

Although Australia has wildfires every year due to natural phenomena, especially during the dry and hot summer months (November to February), it is more likely to cause wildfires. However, southern Australia is facing a severe drought. In previous years, during the same season, about 100 to 300 mm of rain fell every month. However, the rainfall has not been reached for three consecutive years, even less than half. There are signs that climate change is happening, with extreme weather events affecting wildfires more frequently and out of control

In addition, Australia is the world's largest coal exporter and its carbon emissions have been rising for five years in a row, but prime minister Scott Morrison has been named as one of the UN climate summit's main stumbling block to the Paris climate agreement after he said he would not stop relying on the carbon-rich coal industry.

2. How bad are the fires in Australia?

From September 2019 to January 7, 2020, bushfires in Australia have burned more than 8.4 million hectares of land, covering an area larger than 2.3 Taiwan, killing 25 people (including three volunteer firefighters), leaving six people missing, burning more than 2,500 homes, and killing an estimated 480 million animals at the stake or due to lack of habitat and food. It's worse than the amazon rainforest fire that got a lot of attention in 2019, burning about 900,000 hectares. It will take hundreds of years to recover from the destruction of important ecosystems.

Four of Australia's six states have been affected, with the east coast the worst affected, with 148 fires still burning in new south wales, of which 60 are yet to be contained. The uncontrolled fire caused so much air pollution that the snow pear sky was a red orange and smoke could be seen as far as 2,000 kilometers away in New Zealand.

3. Why is the Australian prime minister condemned?

The local fire brigade in new south wales, the state worst affected by the fire, has been unable to respond quickly to disaster relief and prevention because of a lack of federal support and even budget cuts. Fortunately, firefighters, many of them volunteer firefighters, are still working to protect local people and animals. But at the moment, despite the pain and suffering of firefighters and people who have lost their homes, Mr Morrison is ignoring the need for action on climate change.

4. What did greenpeace do?

Due to the high risk of fire fighting and disaster relief work such as fighting wildfires, it is necessary to be professionally trained and equipped to enter the fire site. When a Fire breaks out, greenpeace is the first to pay attention to and investigate the disaster, launch a fundraising campaign to support the local Rural Fire Service, and raise $75,000 (about $1.53 million) for emergency relief, more than the federal government allots in a year to protect people and forests.

In major cities such as snow pear and Brisbane, where severe air pollution caused by the fires has led to a public health crisis, greenpeace distributed face masks in the central business district to call attention to bush fires and strengthen protection measures. In addition, greenpeace Australia mobilized an emergency response, asking the Australian prime minister to face up to the fire crisis, immediately put forward policies to combat climate change, stop the development of fossil coal, and won the support of nearly 100,000 people.

5. What can I do for you?

Although we are far away in Taiwan, we can't get close to the scene and do practical help for the people and animals affected by the disaster, there are still some things you and I can do:

Practice low-carbon life

Greenhouse effect the global climate to the extreme, to slow climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we can choose low carbon way of life, less meat and more vegetables, eat in the quarter in the ingredients, use public transportation more, using provincial electrical appliances, support the development of renewable energy, such as a distraction to the environment in their life.

Tell more people about it

The public is more powerful than you and I can imagine, but it is based on enough public awareness. The concept of climate change is still quite new to many people. We need you and I to share relevant information with more and more people, so that more and more people know that climate change is a global issue that needs everyone's input to support climate-responsive environmental policies.

Long-term focus on the climate crisis

Climate change is not that far away from us. The extreme climate of the world affects each other. Therefore, supporting low-carbon emission policy, protecting forests and protecting oceans are all issues that you and I can continue to pay attention to and devote ourselves to. We invite you to support greenpeace projects to increase the power of justice for the ecology and environment of the earth.
